Universal Life Insurance in New Braunfels, Funded to Last
Universal life gives you lifelong coverage with premiums you can raise or lower as life changes. We help you pick a funding level the policy can actually hold, then tell you how long underwriting should take and keep you posted if that changes.

How universal life works and who it suits
Universal life combines permanent coverage with a cash value account. Each month the carrier takes out the cost of insuring you plus its fees. Whatever you pay beyond that sits in the account and earns interest. You can pay more in good months and less in lean ones, provided the account holds enough.
That flexibility is the big appeal, and it comes with a catch. The monthly insurance charge goes up each year as you age, so a policy kept at the minimum for too long can empty its account in your 70s or 80s. Then the coverage stops right when your family is most likely to need it.
It usually suits people who want lifelong coverage with room to adjust: business owners whose income swings, parents who plan to leave money to a beneficiary, or anyone who has outgrown term life. If fixed premiums and fixed values sound better to you, whole life insurance may be the better match, and we will tell you so.
What we do on a universal life policy
- Purpose before numbers
- Our first questions are about the job this money has to do. Replacing income, clearing debt, leaving something to a child or covering estate costs all point to different amounts. We size the coverage to that answer, not to a sales goal.
- Side-by-side policy designs
- We compare current-assumption, guaranteed, and indexed universal life where they make sense. You see how each one behaves if rates stay low, not just the best case.
- A premium you can keep paying
- We set a target premium with some cushion built in. Then we show you what happens to the policy if you skip a year or pay less.
- Owner and beneficiary details
- We confirm who owns the policy, who receives the money and who is next in line if that person can't. A wrong name or missing backup is easy to fix now and slow to sort out later.
- Annual statement check-ins
- Each year your insurer sends a statement. We read it with you and flag it early if the cash value is falling behind the plan.
When universal life makes sense for you
Term coverage near its end date
A term life policy stops on a fixed date. If you still need protection and your health is not what it was, converting or switching to universal life can keep coverage in place.
Your income goes up and down
Self-employed clients and business owners often have strong years and slow ones. With universal life you can pay in more during a busy stretch and scale back when business slows.
You want coverage that lasts for life
Some needs never expire, like leaving money to a spouse or a child with special needs. A guaranteed design can hold coverage to age 100 or beyond.
An old policy statement looks off
If your yearly statement shows the cash value shrinking, the policy may be underfunded. Catching that a few years early gives you far more options.
What sets your universal life premium
You control some of the price. The insurer charges for the coverage, and you decide how much more to pay in beyond that. These are the biggest drivers of the number.
Your age and health
The cost of insurance depends on your age and underwriting class. Family history, blood pressure and tobacco use all factor in.
Size of the death benefit
More coverage means a higher monthly cost. Some clients begin with less and add more later, which requires underwriting again.
Which guarantees you choose
A no-lapse guarantee costs more than a policy that leans on interest earnings. You give up some flexibility to gain certainty.
How you pay in
Paying more than the minimum in the early years grows the cash value and can reduce what you owe later. Sticking to the minimum saves money now but makes a lapse more likely.
How it works, start to finish
- 1
First phone call
We talk through your goals, your budget, and your health history. Expect about half an hour. You leave the call knowing which designs are worth a closer look.
- 2
Illustrations and a plain explanation
We run illustrations from a few insurers and walk you through them. We point out the guaranteed column, not only the projected one.
- 3
Application and medical exam
Once you choose, we complete the application with you. Most policies need a short paramedical exam, which can be scheduled at a time and place that works for you.
- 4
Underwriting
This usually takes several weeks. It runs longer when the insurer needs records from your doctor. We check status on a set schedule and call you when anything changes, including delays.
- 5
Approval and your first review date
After the insurer approves you, we read through the contract together before you accept it, so nothing in it is a surprise. Then we put your first annual check-in on the calendar so it doesn't slip.

Common questions about universal life
What sets universal life apart from whole life?
With whole life, your payment is fixed and the insurer guarantees how the cash value grows. Universal life lets you change your payments, and sometimes the coverage amount, and its growth tracks interest rates or an index. It often starts out cheaper but needs closer attention over the years.
Is it possible for a universal life policy to lapse?
Yes. Once the cash value can no longer pay the monthly charges, the policy ends unless you add money. For that reason we build in a cushion at the start and go over your statement with you each year.
How long until the policy is issued?
Expect several weeks between application and issue. A clean health history speeds things up. If the insurer requests your doctor's records, it can run longer, and we let you know when that happens instead of leaving you to wonder.
Can I get at the cash value?
In most cases, yes. Most policies allow you to borrow against the cash value or withdraw part of it. Loans gather interest, and any unpaid balance comes out of your beneficiary's payout. Borrowing too much can also make the policy lapse, so we go through the numbers with you first.
Can you help if I live outside New Braunfels?
Yes. Most of our work is done by phone, so clients in Seguin, Schertz, San Marcos and Canyon Lake go through the same steps and get the same check-ins.
